Villa Arancia is located in the village Pigi, 9 km from Rethymno on the road leading to the one of the most historic monasteries in Crete – to Arkadi Monastery. The village is mentioned for the first time at the beginning of the 11th century The name of “Pigi” (“Spring” from the Greek language) is said to come from a rich spring with wonderful water, which was located near the banks of the river but which was destroyed by an earthquake. Important archaeological findings were discrovered in the area of Pigi: vases, amphorae from the Minoan period (2600-1100), Roman coins, but also Byzantine inscriptions from the 4th AD. century. The renovated square of Pigi, the Hero of the fallen of the village, the house of the writer Prevelakis are some of the attractions of the settlement. In addition, the church of Agios Dimitrios, and the 14th century parish single-aisled Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos of Nispita, northwest of the village.

The villa had been constructed in the beginning of the 19th century and from that time its appearance was not changed. The well on its territory dates back to the same period. At that time every house in the village had its own well. Nowadays this well represents a perfectly preserved artifact being the echo of the past. We get immersed in the atmosphere of the past when we observe an ancient loom and other utensils of the villa as well. The measured bell sounds located just two steps away from the villa complete our feeling of the bygone times.

The masterful combination of traditional and modern elements transforms a stay at Villa Arancia into a unique journey between past and present.
